The Church Wilne 10K - 4/9/2011
Keith Gibson and Pete Row were the Little Eaton Hornet attendees at The Church Wilne 10K on the 4th September. It was a very well organised event with over 500 runners. The weather was a bit drizzly - but it kept everyone from overheating ! There was also chip timing as well. Keith got his personal best 10Km (this is his second) of 43 minutes 41 seconds. Pete ran an excellent time in his category.

6 Hornets made the long journey up the road to Edinburgh, 2 for Saturdays 10k,Andy & Jim and 1 for Sundays Marathon Rob with support from Ken,Amy & Alison.

The 10k turned out to be a very hilly affair running up and around Arthur's seat Andy finished in 43min in 49th place and Jim 47min in 107th.

Rob had been suffering with a cold the week before the Marathon and wasn't relishing the challenge but it turned out to be just what he needed to make him take it easy before.Rob ran a well controlled race in a PB time of 3hrs 21min 1sec.

The apartment was excellent and the cooking from Alison and Amy was excellent oh and the Scottish beer was well enjoyed.

8 Hour Indoor Rowing Event - 5/12/2010
On a very cold Sunday lunch time the hornet set about rowing for 8 hour on a concept2 indoor rower in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. Andy Hall started things going at 1pm with team members taking turns on the rower trying to keep the pace up all the time getting off when worn out! with at least £150 pounds raised by people guessing how far they would go in the time allowable every one was doing there best. Regular contributions from Gary,Rob,Jim,Martin,Andrew Martin,Amy,Kath,Andre,Denise,Julie,Ken and Andy meant that some rest was had between efforts although it seemed never enough! A bit of a low patch was hit with about 2.5 hours to go but everyone made it through with Andy finishing what he had started at 9pm the team having covered 107156m before enjoying a couple of well earned pints.

A big thank you to Sue and Bill from the Poets for letting us use the pub and to everyone that brought food and contributed on the day.

Photos to come soon...

British indoor rowing championships 2010 - 21/11/2010
Andy Hall and Martin Harvey represented the hornets in Birmingham for the British indoor rowing championships. Both performed well on the day with Andy doing 7:15.3 and Martin 7:37.9 for the 2000m race which should prove to be good training for the Hornets Charity row on the 5th Dec at the Poets Inn. Many thanks to Ken for coming along to cox the pair of them and help reduce the weight of the cake box!

Dovedale Dash 2010 - 7/11/2010
A really good hornets turn out this morning at Dovedale on an unusually pleasant morning none of the normal high winds and heavy rain just sun. Rob lennox led home with Henry Fletcher then Andrew Martin following closely behind, with good strong runs from the rest of the hornets. A special word for Ken Brown as the oldest runner in the race (sorry Ken no age category prizes in this race).

Indoor Rowing Event - 5/12/2010
Yet again the Hornets are branching out and the indoor rower returns. We are going to do an 8 hr row at the dead poet's Inn in aid of the Teenage cancer trust, the challenge is to cover as many meters as possible and raise as much money as possible. The event will start at 1 O'clock on the 5th we need as many of you as possible so please let Andy Hall, Denise or Ken know if you can help out.

Tara Kinder 10K and Derwent River Relays- July 2010
Well done to all the Hornets who participated in the Tara Kinder 10K. Rob Lennox came in first for the team at a shave below 43mins. Is that a PB Rob?

Plus well done to all in the Derwent River Relays in Belper. I believe it is only the second time we have entered and we made a significant improvement on last years times. There were two squads of Senior Men who came in overall 13th and 33rd out of a total of 55 teams. In the Senior Men category the two teams came 9th and 17th out of 22 teams. Bravo! Well done teams! Definately worth a few beers to celebrate in the Poets for that!

Just one sole Hornet competed in the JCB Lakeside 5. It was good conditions for running, being overcast a little and quite cool. Not bad, but I was a tad slower this year compared to the last. The picture shows it all. More training needed!

No news is old news? New stories wanted! - 05th July 2010
Over the past month or so, there has been a few races to report on. Buxton Half Marathon was done by a small squad that found it tough. I found it harder than Eyam. The run was tough enough to add on approx five to ten mins to everyones normal half marathon times. Still, the weather was good and it was another race to add to the list for me.

A few of us also did the Woolaton Park 10k in the heat of that Saturday and as usual it was a good summer time run. Unfortunately, I have no news for the Little Eaton pre carninval run. But I understand there were a few that were going to take part.

If anyone has any run news or pictures, please email me and I will gladly add them to the site if requested as I have been out of the loop for a couple of weeks, wich makes it harder for me to report on this site. James Naylor has given me a new list of runs for the forthcoming months (thanks Jim). So check out the Race Diary. Bye for now! Happy running!

The Summer is coming- 30th May 2010
Blackpool 10K went well with four hornets running, with a 10 mile pre run train the day before in glorious sunshine. We were again blessed with good weather. Somehow I did not get included in the results, maybe because of shame by the organisers, for me being overtaken by a super fast man dressed as a huge banana! For some strange reason Blackpool, socially, was alot quiter than the last two previous years. Perhaps due to the recent credit crunch?

Eyam Half Marathon went well with about six hornets competing. Plus the Edinburgh Half was quite eventful, with Dr Dave aiding a collapsed German runner to safety, all in the blistering heat the country experienced that weekend. The below image was supplied with thanks to Niall Darroch of www.darrochphotography.com

As we speak a handful of hornets are battling there way through the Tour of The Derwent Valley and putting in some good times. The final leg will be tomorrow with Andy Hall and James Naylor left still in the running for all four events.

Finally, best of luck to Rob Lennox for his first marathon event in Chester tomorrow. Hope all goes well and the weather stays good for it!

Next up is the famous Sinfin Classic 10K at Elvaston Castle on the 6th June at 10.30AM. Happy running!

General Update - 3rd May 2010
Photos have been uploaded in the gallery of the Derby 10K photos. Thanks Andrew Martin! Plus Happy Birthday to Kath in far flung sunny Greece. Congratulations to Amy on completing the London marathon 4h:19m:05s. Plus anyone else who managed to get on our magical national marathon from the club. Next up is the good old Blackpool 10K onslaught! Hope the weather is as kind to us as it has always been!

Finally, we have a new member request from a home grown keen Little Eaton runner. A warm welcome goes to Jonathan, who we have yet to see. Due to work restrictions he is unable to run on club nights but would very much like to run with club members at other times and will no doubt meet many of us at the forthcoming summer runs.

Ashby 20 - 21st March 2010
Well done to all that participated in this years Ashby 20 and for the usual supporters. The weather looked good, together with the times that everyone put in. A good pre London Marathon run for those hardening legs. Some people have just got to make sure they wear their own race chips on the day! Photos of the run are now in the Photo Gallery. As of the 30th March and because we are now beginning to see that much appreciated and missed thing called "sunshine", club training nights on Tuesdays and Thursday will now start at 7PM. Although the clocks going forward by one hour gives us an hour less in bed, we get more time to run in that wonderful sunny Derbyshire countryside!

Hornet Charity Champion - Sept/Oct/Nov 2009
Article that follows by courtesy of Tony and "Upbeat" magazine for the Association of Retired Police Officers:-

Tony Harper has recently completed two gruelling charity events.

He raised over £200 for Help the Hero’s when he and 3 other officers from Gwent completed the Paratroopers 10 mile race on the 13th September at Catterick Barracks in North Yorkshire, this included running 10 miles in full combat clothing carrying a 35lb rucksack which was weighed prior to the race. The team completed the race in under 2 hours.

The second was when Tony completed the New York marathon on the 1st November in a time of 4 hrs 22 minutes. He jointly raised over £5,000 for the Police Dependents Trust. Tony would like to thank everyone who donated.

Tony also represented the Force in the Leicester marathon on the 11th October

Grindleford Gallop 2010 - 13th March 2010
Well done to Martin Harvey and Rob Lennox for their efforts on the 20 odd mile cross country run around the wonderful scenic route of the Peak District. Tales have been told of fierce competition between the two, with cheeky but encouraging banter to help them both along the way. Thanks also go to the sideline supporters James Naylor and Andrew Hall, not forgetting Alison too for her support and the photos. More pictures will be posted in the gallery soon!

Hornets go European!
As most of us all know, Kath and Andre have up sticks to go and live and work in the Greek islands for almost a year for hot climate marathon training (yeh right). They set off fully laden in their VW campervan on the long trek to some far flung Greek Island. All of the club would like to wish them the very best wishes and luck for the journey and their stay (if Kath can hack it that long!). Go easy on the Ouzo and Kalamari! Thanks to Kath and Andre for the leaving party at the Poets. Sorry I didn't get chance to speak to you both before you left. Have fun!

A good time was had by members of the club at the local Shrove Tide. As usual, lots of beer drinking, chip eating, cheering and yawping was done. Photo with thanks to James Naylor. With his quote:- "Elite Training Squad in serious training"

Hollybush Fun Run 2010 - 1st January 2010
Well done to David (Tonys son) yet again for winning this event! Second time in a row champion for the club at Ye Olde Hollybush Inn. Amazing performance with a gut still full of booze from his new year revelling in Nottingham just a few hours before. Approximately six hornets ran in total with lots of support from the non running team members, family etc. Dave ran it in under eleven and a half minutes. Approx half a minute quicker than last year because there were no "killer horses" in the way in on the downhill stretch. Running was tough for all participants suffering from either sore heads, bad guts or both at the same time. Well done again to David and thanks for sharing the gallon of cider with us all afterwards. Talk is of us getting the throphy updated ourselves as there were three previous results not on it, including Daves last win, and it was dusty from being hidden for as many years in a previous winners home in Spain? Results will be posted in the Hollybush within the next few days. Plus, someone is going to email Tony with the results hopefully for him to forward on to everyone who wants to know. Happy New Year everyone!

Queens Head 5K - 27th December 2009
A cold frosty morning yet again for a David Denton run in Belper. Three Hornets participated in total with as many supporters. I led the way for most of the way for the team, but Jim Naylor powered past me on the last few hundred metres and I hadn't quite got the legs to catch him for the finish. Yes, it looks as though I had burnt myself out again! Oh dear. I'll never learn will I? Well done to all. As usual Davids run was well organised and refreshments were provided.

Christmas Cracker - 20th December 2009
This year the traditional run up to The Roaches was cancelled due to the extreme snow conditions. Not all was lost as a 5 mile back-up route around the snow covered Tittesworth reservoir was used as the alternative. With a snow blizzard an hour before, things were not looking too good. The skies eventually cleared and out came approx 400 runners wearing a huge range of fancy dress costumes including super heroes and chimney sweeps etc. It was amazing to see the amount of effort people had put into the costumes to make it more fun. A very confusing start to the run, where everyone went the wrong way and did a U-turn after about 300 metres, made it more of festive challenge than a serious run. Which was fine, as it seemed a few people were running for charity. The route was undulating in places that led you through woods and along the reservoir wall. An enjoyable festive run, with thanks to Ken for club crowd cheering, Pete Roe for the much appreciated cup of coffee from his flask, Bryan Dale for the great free photos once again and James Naylor for the chauffering. Click here for results and more photos on Bryans website. Merry Christmas everyone! Hopefully see you all soon at the Christmas Party.

Shakespeare 10K- 21st November 2009
Race carried out by a couple of Hornets that were not too impressed with the event. Talk of running around cones and strong head winds made it not worth travelling the distance for. None the less Andy Hall gained a PB on this fast course to bring him in just under forty and a half minutes. Results can be found here.

Seagrave Wolds Challenge- 14th November 2009
After bad weather reports for the day, including a severe weather warning the day turned out great. The start was a little chilly with a clear sky. But none the less the sun was out. The event was very well organised with hot drinks and lots of food ranging from home made cakes, crumble and soup. The start of the race was kicked off by the local town crier ringing his bell and shouting how long left to go before we could start. The course was very muddy most of the time, that undulated quite a lot. But the hills, or slopes as Ken would say, were not on the Eyam scale. There were three check points in total along the way, with each of them well stocked with drinks mars bars and piles of jelly babies. The landscape was varied, with us running mainly through fields and farms and a couple of times through village estates. Near the end, I thought, was the toughest part. Very cruel. With us constantly climbing up ploughed fields with a strong head wind. It was all worth it in the end with all the food and drink that was supplied. Pictures were taken at the event by a photographer and can be found at the following link:-

Leg It Round Lathkill - 8th November 2009
This race started with a little bit of sunshine and the temperature was almost perfect for running. Participants included five runners with Ken and Guylaine supporting. Martin, Andy and myself all improved on last years times and it was a first for Amy. Unfortunately, Jim twisted his ankle about half way and got a lift from a spectator back to the pub. Again, conditions were very muddy and drizzly on the top of the valley. But, as usual, the run ended with laughing and giggling and the odd pint or half. Unfortunately, the race did not have our own official photographers at hand. So no piccies for this one. Unless, anyone found pictures from trawling the web! Please email me if so.

Dovedale Dash - 1st November 2009
A good turn out for the club on what was a very wet, cold and muddy day again. Fourteen runners and two supporters! As usual, the field to park the cars in was waterlogged from the previous night of rain. Attractions along the way included two aliens, as seen previously from last year, rugby players with ball (that I actually had the opportunity to give a good kick down the valley), half naked chained man with a gimp mask and a runner all the way from Korea. Thanks to Guylaine and Alison for the photos and cheering. The photos will appear in the gallery as soon as possible.

Worksop Half Marathon - 25th October 2009
A good turn out for the Sunday, as the weather was perfect for this Autumnal run with the sun out and a cool breeze. Eight hornets competed in total, followed by five hornet-dedicated cheering crowd members. Results were good with myself and Andy Hall beating Half Marathon personal bests. Plus, thanks go to Andy Halls wife for the Flapjack super fuelling. See more images in the new gallery entry. Also, new images added for the Belper Rugby Rover 09 event, with thanks to Pete Roe who supplied the images.

Hornets Club vests - 23rd October 2009
New club vests are now available, to those of you that have asked for new ones. They have been made by a new supplier with the Ronhill logo on and the material is very slightly different to the last ones in terms of weight. They seem lighter. See Martin or Denise Harvey at club nights on Tuesday or Thursday. Failing that, have a chat with Ken. Again, vests are £15 and there are a few mens and ladies spare if anyone had not ordered.

New news for all who have been waiting for all this time! Well done to Amy, Andy, Martin and Jim at the Congleton Half recently! As far as I have heard this race was enjoyable and a pleasure to run. Andy has done it four times now. Hopefully we'll have more of the team next year. Photos below are courtesy of absoluterunning.com and Bryan Dale's race photos. Well done guys and gal!

Trentham 10 - 20th July 2008
The Trentham 10 race started in the village of Tittensor, and is a 2 lap race that followed an undulating course on road through the staffordshire countryside. It was a tough race and all who took part were thankfull of a light drenching halfway round. participants were andy Hall, Henry Fletcher, James Naylor, Dave Young and Keith Gibson. The club runners put in a brave performance and there was only a 12 minute difference between first and last runner.

A great Sunday morning, Thanks Jim.

JCB Lakeside 5 -17th July 2008
Thanks to James for inviting us to this race on Thursday 17th July. It started at 7.00pm which may be a bit early for some to get to. However for future reference it only took 30 minutes from Little Eaton down the A50 and you can park right near the start.

It runs from the JCB social club around small lanes locally in a very picturesque setting despite the presence of a large grey box for making diggers in. The gardens and landscaping around the lake are more like a stately home than a factory. Organisation and facilities were good including late entries. There was a 3 mile fun run just before the main race and both were started and compered by Christopher Biggins. Not every body's running icon but a professional 'gob on a stick' made a change from David Denton none the less.

Although only five miles the course takes in two laps on lanes followed by a short out and back by the lake for the last 3/4 mile. Despite claims that this was a flat course it rises steadily by about 150 feet over nearly a mile right off the start. Encouragement was on hand as a field of cows decided to cheer loudly as we passed. This is followed by a sharp descent all the way down over the next 1/4 of a mile. The rest of the lap was flat. With two drinks stations on the lap each of which was passed twice there was abundant refreshment for just 5 miles though with the risk that you would need a toilet stop as well.

Over 300 runners took part. It was a good competitive race for James, Henry and myself with the lead changing hands several times and all finishing within 40 seconds.

After the finish car, bar and BBQ were all within convenient staggering distance so that we could recover before returning to the Poets.

Results were posted the next day. - Andrew Martin 20.7.8

Flora London Marathon 2008 . 13th April 2008
Three Little Eaton Hornets completed the London Marathon myself Henry and Phill. Two of us proudly wearing our new club vests. For me personally it was the fulfilment of a long held ambition to complete the legendary distance of 26 miles and 385 yards and become a real runner! I can now take part in discussions about "The Wall" and "Oh my God those last 6 miles!!" I started in Zone 9 having stupidly, when entering, put down a realistic finishing time. Therefore I lined up well behind assorted gorillas, cornish pasties ,scooby doos and men wearing only thongs (Something to consider for club runs i suggest)

Consequently I spent the first 23 miles weaving in and out of slower runners trying to tell myself that it is the taking part that counts. However the last 2 to 3 miles along the embankment past Big Ben the Houses of Parliament and into the Mall was an amazing experience. Finally crossing the finish line I found myself getting emotional a truly satisfying moment. The weather was pretty much perfect for distance running so upon reflection I suppose 4 hours 21 minutes wasnt too bad congrats to Henry for 3 30 and Phil for 4 40 although to put it into perpective Phil ran another 25 mile event the week after!

The tv coverage doesnt reflect the
amazing crowd support the constant noise and music the general party atmosphere. Every runner must do this race if only to experience the atmosphere. Thanks to the club for allowing me the privilege of taking part.Click here to see more pictures- james Naylor 23.4.8

Easter in the Lakes - 21st - 24th March 2008
Congratulations and thank you to all those hardy souls (14 adults and 2 children) who made it to Brotherswater for the weekend, despite the extreme weather forecasts. For once the forecasters got it right: we arrived Friday to gale force winds and sleet; Saturday brought high winds, sunshine and hail; we awoke Sunday morning to discover a heavy fall of snow; and Monday was v. cold with spells of sunshine! At least it didn't rain! Despite the extreme conditions we all, hopefully, had a good time getting in some magnificent walks, short training runs, a 10k run, visits to Ambleside and repeated visits to the Golden Mule (Rule), Kirkstone Inn and Brotherswater Inn!

Hopefully, there will be more in-depth reports and photo's, from various participants, but I just wanted to thank you all for supporting this weekend, smiling in the face of adverse weather conditions and hope that you had a good time! Click here to see the pictures - Kath 26.3.8

Ashby 20 - 9th March 2008
The Hornets were well represented at the Ashby 20 on Sunday, probably as a result of having paid our entry fees before we saw the weather forecast. On the day though we were treated to easily the best weather of the year. A little windy and a few tantalising drops of rain that would have given some welcome relief if it had become a brief shower - yes at times it was actually warm!

All runners distinguished themselves in their own way with most improved (by far) going to Dave who completed the course this year without the aid of the internal combustion engine so an be truly proud to wear his coveted sweatshirt. Just a shame that it wasn't available in matching red. Pete (middle) crossed the line in the best style looking serenely Californian in his sun glasses. Did he know something about the weather that we didn't? Most predictable and controlled performance was taken by Jim with his perfect 50/50 split time and enviable discipline to run to a set plan. Some others had rather more difficulty in predicting their own performance. There were two contenders for the wooden spoon in this department. Gez tried with, "I can't keep up this pace", immediately before pulling away to not only set the best time but finish strongly as well. However Henry was even more outrageous with, "I'm just going to do eight minute miles and treat this as a training run". One mile and six minutes and fifty five seconds later the enormity of his error was apparent. As for me I was content with the fact that although it had taken me two years to improve by one minute my time was at least going in the right direction for now.

A special thank you must go to Pete (youngish) and Julie for being there to support us and proving that its not just bad pennies that turn up where you don't expect them. Following their lead the Hornets had by far the best support as there were steadily more of us gathered to cheer our finishers over the line with such rousing chants as "Come on you old fart!". Pete also gets the credit for the photos from the day (did you get one of the girl on the motorbike?)

The Ivanhoe Runners, who organise the event, run the course the day before as they are all busy on the Sunday. As we were enjoying the feel of some sun at the finish the commentator informed us that they had felt guilty the year before as the club had run in fine weather on the Saturday before the main event succumbed to rain, wind and sleet. This year although they got the worst of it on Saturday it would be very unfair to say that the sun had only shone on the righteous. They are owed a big thank you for the smooth operation of a very friendly event with all the care and enthusiasm that marks it out as being put on by runners for runners. Do Hornets like hills?!? - Charnwood Hills race. 3rd February 2008
On Sunday 3rd February, it was good to see so many Hornets at the Charnwood Hills race. This is sure to become a firm favourite with the club over the coming years. Eight of us took part. In order of finishing these were Henry, Martin H, Tony Harper, David Harper, Middle Pete, Young Pete, Jim Naylor and Phil.

Though cold and extremely muddy in places it was enjoyed by all, with excellent views of the Leicestershire countryside from the beautiful Bradgate Park. The race takes in the shire's highest point, Beacon Hill, which gives an idea of the amount of climbing involved. Click here to see the pictures - Young Pete 3.2.8

Well done to all!!!

Hornets Club vests. 20th January 2008
We are having some new running vests made, anyone wanting a new vest please read the sizing details below and let either Denise or myself know sizes and quantities. I have the majority of members information supplied at the club dinner, however if you have not received an confirmation email about the vests Email me here. Vest sizing is as follows based on information supplied by the manufacturer (Wasp sports)

The Vests are made out of polyester and are generously cut and designed to finish approximately 1 – 2” larger than the Standard Chest size stated, thereby providing an e-a-s-y, rather than ‘tight’ fit.
Adult: 30” 32” 34” 36” 38” 40” 42” 44” 46” and above

Therefore it has been advised that if you desire a slim fitting vest to order the the size 2 inches smaller than your actual size. (for example i wear a 42" jacket, so for slim fit vest i will be ordering a size 40) The vest will be embroidered with the new Hornets logo on the breast, and in addition will have the "hornet" emblem on the back above the shoulders

The cost of the vests is £15.00 Money is payable to myself or Denise cash please. Additional items ie sweaters, fleeces, shorts can be embroidered for a additional £2.00 each. - Henry 20.1.8
